UPDATES

As well as nutrient mapping PHIELD TEK can use the GPS equipped quad bikes for a range of other precision mapping services.

Map & Measure

The map & measure service is especially useful for growers who may be renting land and would like to confirm the measurement of a cropped area. In many cases PHIELD TEK have found measured areas to be less than the agreed contracted area. Whole farms can also be mapped to include woodland, environmental schemes and areas of pheasant cover. The sub metre accuracy of the hardware added to the manoeuvrability of a quad bike means measurements are far more precise than when using a tractor. The measuring service can also be applied to showgrounds, racecourses and sports venues.

One of our recent clients found that they could have paid rental charges for an extra 53 acres of land which was actually in an environmental scheme and could not have been cropped. A significant saving to the client.

PCN Analysis

Potato Cyst Nematode can have devastating effects on a crop. PCN analysis is therefore one of the most intensive sampling services that we carry out. Taking approximately 50 samples per hectare provides detailed analysis for egg counts and cyst counts as well as cyst speciation if found to be present. GPS PCN mapping can be carried out with or without the nutrient mapping service for P, K, Mg & pH. Please contact us for more information

Intensive pH sampling

This service is of use to growers who wish to identify variations in soil acidity or alkalinity across the farm. Soil pH can change dramatically in one field and is often affected by soil types, drainage, contours and cropping. Intensive pH sampling gives 4 separate pH results per hectare which identifies very concentrated management zones for variable lime application. Please contact us for more information

October 2010 - Congratulations to Brian & Patrick Barker of E J Barker & Sons who won the 2010 Farmers Weekly Countryside Farmer of the Year Award. PHIELD TEK have been GPS mapping their Suffolk farms in the 2 years prior to the award and no doubt the greatly reduced fertiliser applications they have enjoyed will have helped them to achieve their award winning standards.

July 2010 - The end of W pattern sampling?

For years we've been advised to sample soil for nutrients by walking in a W pattern across fields, but next year the advice is set to change.

We have known for some time that there are better ways to collect soil samples than on a W path through fields, and that alternative sample schemes may return more information for our effort, but we've stuck with the W because it is logistically simple, says Murray Lark of Rothamsted Research.

The HGCA funded desk study says, "The problem with a W route for field averages is that often, some of the sampling points are too close together so effort is wasted. Our provisional findings suggest that computer-generated, optimised schemes can give a better marginal return"

Jan 2010 - PHIELD TEK are currently looking for operators in some parts of the UK. If you would like to find out more about the opportunities available please contact us.
